Appeared in Graham Norton The Gossips: Nicole Kidman/Cynthia Erivo/James Norton/Chris McClausland/Benson Boone (2024)
A high-powered CEO jeopardizes her career and family when she begins a torrid affair with her much younger intern. Jean Reno shot some scenes for the film, but they were cut entirely from the finished film.
The story centers on a self-centered, power-hungry, narcissistic CEO who cheats on her husband, to put it simply
The film attempts to tell the story from the female perspective, prioritizing emotion over logic, romanticizing the situation, and even attempting to justify her actions. It initially leans heavily on the “strong, independent woman” trope, portraying her as a victim of oppressive men who want to see her fail as a CEO, but that message later contradicts itself, suggesting that (some) women actually prefer to be subjugated by their male counterparts.
Their mind says A, but their feelings say B
This inconsistency not only confuses the narrative, but also undermines its message. The film also shows a lot of hypocrisy from the female CEO, perhaps with the goal of shedding light on the complexities of the female psyche.
If that was the intent, it succeeds in some ways
However, the film remains overly romanticized, unrealistic, slow, and boring, making it difficult to stay engaged. Ultimately, the film seems to appeal more to a female audience, which is likely reflective of its target demographic.
